By Senior Residents, SingHealth Anaesthesiology Residency Programme

This year, we welcome our first Internal Clinical Learning Environment Review (CLER) in KK Hospital. This review is designed to provide our residency programme with periodic feedback that addresses six areas: patient safety, health care quality, care transition, supervision, well-being and professionalism.

As the pioneer batch of residents involved in this internal review, there is undoubtedly plenty of anxiety among the residents. Our programme was incredibly supportive, and we felt prepared for the review with all the resources. We had prior meetings with our programme director and was given information as well as clear schedule of the walkaround. Faculties also offered to relief us of our clinical duties during the interview.

The walkaround was conducted in a safe and organised manner. Two external reviewers were present during the evaluation. Without interfering our clinical duties, the reviewers observed and interviewed the residents from both Women’s and Paediatric Anaesthesia departments in the operating theatre, intensive care unit, labour ward and children’s pain service. The reviewers were kind and genuine. They truly cared for our training and wellbeing; they even interviewed the nurses to better understand our clinical duties and the support we receive as a trainee.

It is important that our programme is being audited regularly with such reviews which reflect how the residency cared for our training and wellbeing. Not only this allows our programme to develop and improve, but this review also served as a platform to present our residency programme to the others.

There is no better way to review our residency programme than a physical walkaround to appreciate our patient care, resident wellness, training, and supervision!
